Hastings Borough Bonfire Society

Guardians of the Sussex Bonfire Tradition in Hastings

Hastings Borough Bonfire Society exists to uphold the Sussex tradition of celebrating the thwarting of the Gunpowder Plot November 5th 1605 with a bonfire, procession and fireworks. This was an attempt to blow up King and Parliament by Guy Fawkes and friends.

Hastings Bonfire Night is held on the nearest Saturday to October 14th (Battle of Hastings Day). So it also celebrates the battle.

2012 Fundraising Events

The event is organised by Hastings people for Hastings people. It is not run by the Council although they do contribute. It costs over £16,000 to put on. The Society works tirelessly to raise the money during the year but with ever escalating costs more sponsorship is needed to keep the event going.

Ladies Wot Walk - Sunday 20th May 2012

Not long now until the guys need to shave their legs, get out their high heels and sheer stockings and generally glam it up for this hugely popular event. We had a few Ladies Wot Walk Virgins last year who enjoyed the freedom of wearing a skirt so much they can hardly wait to do it again, although I understand there will be no tandem involved this year. It's hard for the ladies to come up with a memorable costume when surrounded by all that talent and of course Twig is always difficult to beat with her imaginitive costumes, but don't give up ‐ think of old movies, cartoon characters, fairy stories, nursery rhymes, glam rock bands ‐ anything that doesn't look like your normal relaxing at the weekend clothes really. This day out in the sun raises huge amounts of money for HBBS and looks set to rival the Gay Pride weekend for the largest group of glamorous "Lady Boys" on the South Coast.

Meet, greet and sign in at the BoPeep at 12noon, ready to hit the streets at 13:00 sharp. Shake ya bucket at local hostelries on route, then up to the Stag to laugh it all off.

Come along, join in and help HBBS raise much needed funds. All you need to participate is £5.00 entrance fee, your sponsorship form, a frock, a hat and balls!! This year there is a prize for the entrant who collects the most sponsor money!! So make sure you ask everyone - every penny helps.
